Hellgate is largely based on and inspired by Judeo-Christian traditions of hell, demons, and the supernatural. It features a wide diversity of demonic enemies, with a hierarchal structure for the forces of evil.
Origin of Evil[]
A storm of supernatural horrors driven by the lashes of Dark Wills who have devoured countless civilizations, Demons are as old as time itself. Born as a direct consequence of the Creator blessing the absolute nothingness of space with ever-expanding life, Demons are the antithesis of life. They are coalesced evil -- manifestations of hate, fear and unknown sins that thrive on mortal impurity.
Though most in the Shadow's thrall exist as nameless beasts and ethereal nightmares, the Dark Wills are those that have consumed countless billions and have endured the unceasing expansion of the cosmos -- that sickening spread of life they so abhor. Those select few have attained identity and rank through conquest (mortality has given name to the nameless). And these beings of absolute malevolence now govern the seemingly senseless slaughter and rape of worlds. They command the ever-starving Darkness that ravages without conscience. In turn, they and their legions vast are endowed with the power of newly corrupted civilizations. Their Burn purges whole worlds of life and supplies their unnatural birthplace of fire and decay with nourishment that propels the Shadow forward to ravage again and again. Above them sit The Eldest, demons of even greater renown and power.
And above all sits The First, the icy heart of all Evil everywhere. The First is consumed by a desire to undo that which The Creator has done. He is the opposite of all that is good. He is death to life, hate to love, horror to joy. He is the end of all beginnings. He is the hint at something far worse. The Dark Wills are but puppets to The First. The Eldest are but hints of his terror.
The Hierarchy of Hell[]
The First[]
He who challenges the Creator. He who challenges life. First being of The Darkness wrought as a counter to the Creation of all life.
The Eldest[]
Demon Lords of unimaginable power that have existed since shortly after the Dawn of Creation. Direct subjects of The First. Overseers of Dark Wills and the entire Shadow vast. They represent reprehensible aspects of The First.
Dark Wills[]
Governors of the slaughter and rape of worlds. Masters of Greater Demons, they plan and execute The Burn, The Corruption and The Consumption of worlds under the iron first of an Eldest. Often during a purge of new life, there shall be a Dark Will to command every caste of demon.
Greater Demons[]
Organizers of The Shadow's ranks who are on the verge of attaining identity, though some already have. Lash masters.

Demons that Appear in London 2038[]
Sydonai[]
Asmodai (also Ashmodai, Asmodeus, Asmody, Asmoday) appears as the king 'Asmoday' in the Ars Goetia, where he is said to have a seal in gold and is listed as number thirty-two according to respective rank.[4] He "is strong, powerful and appears with three heads; the first is like a bull, the second like a man, and the third like a ram; the tail of a serpent, and from his mouth issue flames of fire."[4] Also, he sits upon an infernal dragon, holds a lance with a banner and, amongst the Legions of Amaymon, Asmoday governs seventy two legions of inferior spirits.

Murmur[]
Duke/Count Murmur (also Murmus, Murmuur, Murmux) is a Great Duke and Earl of Hell, and has thirty legions of demons under his command. He teaches Philosophy, and can oblige the souls of the deceased to appear before the conjurer to answer every desired question. Murmur is depicted as a soldier riding a Vulture or a Griffin, and wearing a ducal crown. Two of his ministers go before him making the sound of trumpets. "Murmur" in Latin means noise, whisper, murmur, and the sound of the trumpet.

Oriax[]
Orias (also spelled Oriax) is a Great Marquis of Hell, and has thirty legions of demons under his command. He knows and teaches the virtues of the stars and the mansions of the planets (the influence of each planet depending on the astrological sign in which it is in a specific moment and the influence of that sign on an individual depending on how the zodiac was configured at the moment of his/her birth or at the moment of asking a question to the astrologist); he also gives dignities, prelacies, and the favour of friends and foes, and can metamorphose a man into any shape.
